Shop Drawings and Submittals

Steel Detailing Tied to the Shop That Builds It

Shop drawings, erection drawings and submittals for your structural steel and miscellaneous metals, handled through Heartland Steel and coordinated with our fabrication shop in Woodway, Texas.

Why It Matters

Drawings Built for Fabrication

Most steel problems in the field start on paper. A missed dimension or an unclear connection in the shop drawings turns into a piece that does not fit when it reaches the site.

When detailing runs through the same company that fabricates your steel, the drawings are reviewed with the shop in mind. Questions get answered before steel is cut, and you have one company accountable for both.

Steel detailing, defined

Steel detailing is the process of turning the engineer's and architect's design drawings into shop drawings and erection drawings. Shop drawings show how each piece is fabricated, and erection drawings show where each piece goes and how it connects in the field.

Questions From GCs

Steel Detailing FAQ

What is steel detailing?

Steel detailing turns the engineer's and architect's design drawings into shop drawings and erection drawings. Shop drawings tell the fabricator how to build each piece, and erection drawings show where each piece goes on site.

What is the difference between shop drawings and erection drawings?

Shop drawings show how each individual piece of steel is cut, drilled and welded in the shop. Erection drawings show the full layout of the structure, with piece marks that tell the field crew where each member goes.

Is detailing included in your steel packages?

Yes. Detailing is handled through Heartland Steel as part of our turnkey packages, and it can be included with fabrication scopes so drawings and fabrication stay under one contract.

Can you fabricate from drawings our own detailer already produced?

Yes. We fabricate from approved shop drawings, whether they come through Heartland Steel or from a detailer already on your project.

Do you provide connection design?

Yes. Connection design comes with detailing through Heartland Steel when the project specifications call for it, so connections are designed, drawn and fabricated as one coordinated package.

Who approves the shop drawings?

Shop drawings are submitted to the general contractor, who typically routes them to the architect and engineer of record for review. Fabrication starts once the drawings are approved.
